Job Description

This role will work closely with the Nursery Lead to execute time sensitive breeding and seed production program activities and research projects. Primary responsibilities include greenhouse and indoor seed, pollen, and clone activities, general sanitation and maintenance, IPM, labor management, and other tasks as needed. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Labor Management and Organization: + Ability to understand breeding program goals + Ability to work and communicate in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving teamwork-based interdepartmental environment + Ability to receive and give training and manage multiple entry-level hourly employees in their daily Nursery-related activities. + Assist Nursery Lead with planning labor needs. + Provide a safe and positive work environment for hourly employees. Field, Greenhouse and Growth Chamber activities: + Ability to learn and adhere to Nursery and Breeding SOPs including: + Propagation and maintenance of clone-based germplasm collection + Staging plants for pollen or seed production in coordination with Nursery Lead and Lead Breeder + Sowing and transplanting field, greenhouse and growth chamber trials. + Pruning and plant maintenance. + Cleaning and basic sanitation of work areas. + Labelling and inventory of plants. + Fertigation and Quality Control + Implement infrastructure improvements under guidance of Nursery Lead IPM and plant health + Ability to learn a comprehensive knowledge of Cannabis pests and diseases, appropriate preventative measures and curative responses. + Ability to learn a comprehensive knowledge of Cannabis abiotic stressors (nutrition and environment), appropriate preventative measures and curative responses under the direction of the Nursery Lead. + Ability to mix and apply IPM to all Nursery or Seed Production environments at the advice and discretion of the IPM Specialist. Phenotyping, data collection and data management: + Assist with data collection from field and greenhouse trials. Collect and upload data from routine program activities such as germination testing, seed inventory, pollen inventory, and environmental monitoring + Data upload and storage onto cloud-based database management software Research and Development: + Execute experiments to improve cultural practices under the guidance of Nursery Lead, Lead Breeder, Assistant Breeder, or Chief Scientific Officer General + Help if necessary with equipment use and breakdowns and equipment maintenance. Follow protocols to produce a safe, harmonious and productive work environment. + Performs the responsibilities of supervisory/senior staff in their absence. Follows CCA Policies, Procedures, Standards, and Rules & Regulations, and ensures that they are completing their duties in a safe and efficient manner. + Ensures that established safety guidelines are followed and complies with O.S.H.A. and Right‐to‐Know standards. + Successfully perform the above functions and use said equipment independently without supervision. + Operate CCA motor vehicles to transport personnel, materials, and equipment on CCA Commission property and public roadways. + Assists with carrying out standard operational procedures, as required, including potential overtime during high volume periods (harvest and transplantings). Supervises personnel and seasonal employees as may be assigned. Supervision Received: This role reports to the Nursery Lead through daily meetings and guidance. Qualifications & Skills: REQUIRED: + One year of experience in a nursery or seed production facility + Computer literacy and familiarity with information management systems and MS office. + Ability to communicate respectfully and professionally with a range of team members and collaborators. + Manage time effectively to meet deadlines and time sensitive tasks. + Fluency in English and Spanish is required. + Applicants must be eligible to work in the US. Physical Demands and Work Environment: May be required to lift up to 40 lbs. Potential exposure to allergens, especially pollen and dust. Exposure to both hot and cold temperatures in conditions that can be dirty and dusty. Flexibility with working hours during critical periods.
